CIRCLE OF BONES
Movies
and television shows are always a great way to come up with new
and unusual ideas for Halloween. Here's a really
sinister looking Halloween decoration that was inspired by
the "Necromancing the Stone" episode from the television
series "Charmed". In this particular episode, a Necromancer
is resurrected by
his underling within a pentagram shaped magic circle made up from
human
skulls and bones.
On its own, this unique arrangement has a very
chilling appearance, but add a costumed person or prop
figure standing
ominously in
the center of the circle and its a very impressive visage.
The
basic parts to re-create this display as a macabre Halloween decoration are five "Budget Life-Size 2-Piece Skulls (1st Quality)"
and ten "Femur's", both available for online purchase from
The
Skeleton Store. These are just what you need to make a
circle large enough for a person or a full size
Halloween prop figure to stand in, measuring roughly five
feet across.
If you want to make a Circle of Bones that is larger than the
one portrayed in the television show, just use three femur's instead of two in between each skull.
This will make a circle that measures over seven across.
We positioned all of the skulls to face
inwards, except for the one in front, so that our visitors could see them clearly. If you want the skulls to look like
they did in the episode of "Charmed", you will
want to
remove the lower jaw of each skull by removing the screws
that hold the jaw springs to the skull.

Its
important to remember that
these skulls and bones are made white in color because
they are manufactured primarily for the medical industry
and are not meant to look old and creepy. So, you'll want to distress them to give them
that "fresh from the grave" appearance. You can do
this following the instructions in our "Distressing"
article.
Arraigning the skulls and femurs into the
desired shape is fairly easy,
just place a skull on the
floor or ground, then
place either two or three of the femurs, depending on the
size circle you are making, on either side of it in a straight
line, and so on until a pentagon shaped circle is complete.
The
femurs are fairly heavy and tend to stay in place well, but you can
hot-glue them together if you are worried about them coming
apart and becoming disarranged. Just remember, once you hot
glue them together, they will be hard to seperate for
storage.

Glowing Eye Sockets
For
an extra spooky touch you can make the eye sockets of the
skulls to glow in the
dark by painting
them with fluorescent paint. This will make them glow eerily
under black light enhancing there overall effect. Either red or green colored fluorescent paint works
well for this and look very creepy.
You can dress-up in a variety of costumes such as a grim
reaper, demon,
sorceress, wizard, or even a ghostly apparition and you'll
put a real scare into your Halloween visitors.
